Unter Fouling (engl. Verschmutzung, Bewuchs) versteht man die Verschmutzung von wärmeübertragenden Anlagenteilen durch Inhaltsstoffe beispielsweise des benutzten Kühlwassers. In der Kühltechnik und auch anderen technischen Bereichen unterscheidet man zunächst grob nach Mikro- und Makrofouling.
