Geomagnetische Messungen mit Messungen auf der Erdoberfläche sensieren die Verteilung magnetischer Minerale in den oberen 20-30 km der Erdkruste.
Die Geomagnetik am Boden ist eine wenig invasive geophysikalische Explorationsmethode. Zur Messung werden Instrumente genutzt, die Magnetometer genannt werden. Diese Instrumente sind tragbar (backpack). Messungen können an Einzelpunkten, auf Profilen oder in der Fläche gemacht werden. Die Messgeräte können getragen werden oder auf Fahrzeugen montiert sein.
Das Mess-Design hängt von der Form des Untersuchungsobjekts und dessen Tiefe ab. Meist sind die Messpunkte auf Profilen oder Rastern, sie können aber auch statistische verteilt sein (random walk). Punktdichten und Rasterabstände müssen das Abtattheorem erfüllen. Profile werden meist senkrecht zu erwarteten Strukturstreichen angelegt. Zusätzlich sind Daten an einer festen Basisstation aufzuzeichnen.

In der Geothermie werden bodengeomagnetische Messungen relativ selten eingesetzt im Gegensatz zur Aeromagnetik. Sie sind allenfalls geeignet relativ oberflächennahe Vorkommen zu kartieren. Hierzu siehe auch Geomagnetik.
